Day eight found us in Venice. We visited the Piazza San Marco and St. Mark's Basilica and, of course, took a gondola ride complete with an Italian singer (unfortunately not on our boat though) who serenaded us throughout the ride.

Venice is the capital of the Veneto region with a population of approximately 271,367 (census estimate January 1, 2004). The city historically was an independent nation. Venice has been described as being one of Europe's most romantic cities.

The city stretches across 118 small islands in the marshy Venetian Lagoon along the Adriatic Sea in northeast Italy. The saltwater lagoon stretches along the shoreline between the mouths of the Po (south) and the Piave (north) Rivers.
